Understanding Different Types Of Cannabis

Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis

Cannabis is a plant divided into three main strains: Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis. Each strain has its own unique characteristics with benefits for different purposes.

The Differences Between Sativa, Indica, Ruderalis

Today’s hybrid strains of cannabis all derive from three types of strains, sativa, indica, and ruderalis. So, understanding the original strain types helps users determine which suits them best. At this point, very few “pure” strain types exist, but the older classic strains like Panama Red and Hindu Kush tend to be closer to the genetics of one particular strain type.

Indica

Indica strains typically demonstrate relaxing and sedative effects. Used often to treat pain, insomnia, and anxiety, Indica strains have a higher CBD to THC ratio, which means they have less psychoactive effects but more potential medicinal benefits. These strains typically have a short, bushier growth pattern, and flower faster than sativa strains.

Sativa

Sativa strains, on the other hand, possess a reputation for their energizing and uplifting effects. Many health practitioners recommend Sativa to treat depression, fatigue, and lack of appetite. Sativa strains have a higher THC to CBD ratio, which means they have more psychoactive effects too. These strains typically display a tall, thin growth pattern, and have a longer flowering period than indica strains.

Ruderalis

Ruderalis is a lesser-known strain of cannabis, it’s used for breeding and hybridizing with indica and sativa strain to improve the plants performance characteristics, hardiness, and to add autoflowering genetics to the resulting hybrid strains. Ruderalis strain is shorter, hardier and flowers faster than Indica or Sativa, but it has lower THC concentration compared to other two strains. This makes it less preferred for recreational use, and more used for industrial hemp.

Using Sativa, Indica, Ruderalis For Different Purposes

Each of these strains possess benefits for different purposes, depending on the individual’s needs and preferences. Indica strains work great for relaxing at night and help with sleep, while Sativa strains energize and uplift during the day. Ruderalis mostly improves industrial hemp production or adds autoflowering genes to hybrid strains. When choosing a strain, it is important to consider the effects you want to achieve, as well as the growing conditions, flower time and other characteristics of the strain.

Cannabis Strain Terminology

Common Terminology Associated With Cannabis

Hybrid

A cannabis hybrid is a plant resulting from crossbreeding different varieties of the cannabis plant. These varieties are typically divided into three categories: Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis. Each of these varieties has its own unique set of characteristics, such as the height of the plant, the shape of the leaves, and the compounds present in the plant. By crossing different varieties, growers can create new strains with a combination of the desired characteristics from each parent plant. Some example of popular Cannabis hybrids are Durban Poison and Blue Dream.

Phenotype

Phenotype is a set of observable characteristics of a particular variety of cannabis plant, including its physical appearance, aroma, and chemical makeup. These characteristics are determined by the genetic makeup (genotype) of the plant, as well as by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and light exposure. Phenotyping is a process of identifying and selecting plants with specific desired characteristics, such as high levels of a particular cannabinoid or terpene, or with a particular appearance or aroma.

Landrace

Landrace cannabis strains are pure, native varieties of cannabis that have evolved over thousands of years in specific geographic regions. They are known for their unique genetic makeup, distinct physical characteristics, and diverse aroma and flavor profiles. Some of the most well-known landrace strains include Afghan Kush, Colombian Gold, Malawi Gold, and Thai Stick.
