Medical Cardholder Savings Benefits

Medical marijuana patients who have obtained a state ID card do not have to pay the 37% State Excise Tax, nor do they have to pay State Sales or the local business Tax for their Department of Health approved medical cannabis products. This means medical cannabis patients can save nearly 50% on their typical purchases.

If a patient does not wish to obtain a state ID card, then provided they have a current medical authorization form, they do not have to pay state or local taxes on their purchases but will still be required to pay excise tax.

A patient with a current authorization from a qualified health practitioner may also grow 6 to 15 plants based on their doctor’s recommendation. Only a current authorization is required in this case and an ID card is not required.

Look for the products approved by the WA State Department of Health. These products carry a logo which means they met rigorous standards. Those products meet compliance standards to use according to a health practitioners recommended guidance. With products specifically designed for authorized medical patients, these products maintain the highest level of quality. The Department of Health in WA sets the specific assurances guiding production, packaging, and usages.

Product Compliance Logos

If a cannabis product contains one of these logos, then the WA State Department of Health tested it for full compliance. It is approved for medical cannabis users. ONLY products that contain these logos passed the strict requirements. Therefore, they meet the regulatory requirements enforced by the Department of Health in Washington.

For example, if a product displays a high CBD logo, then it generally carries a very small amount of THC in ratio to the CBD. However, ask your bud tender for more information if you have questions.

Tested & Monitored

To earn a compliance logo, the product must pass testing protocols for use of pesticides, traces of heavy metals, insect infestation, and types of fertilizers used in production. The products must be grown and processed within a clean room to meet sanitary restraints. Compliant products must also test for potency. A “High THC” logo generally means the product contains a high dosage of concentrated THC.

For high THC products especially, users must stay mindful to avoid the risk of over-indulgence.

Medical Marijuana Basics

Medical cannabis, per a medical practitioner’s recommendation, is available for patients with terminal or debilitating health conditions. For more information go to the Washington Department of Health information page.
Intractable pain, cancer, PTSD, Crohns Disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions all qualify. Ask your health practitioner if your specific condition meets the criteria.
Medical practitioners use a specific authorization form and must also be authorized by the State to recommend patients for cannabis use. A medical practitioner fills out the patient authorization form for respective patients; patients do not fill out their own authorization forms.
Once authorized, a patient earns the optional right to obtain a medical marijuana ID card. A specially accredited bud tender staff member earns this designation by taking a special course and exam offered by the state of Washington. An accredited bud tender enters information from the authorization form into a state maintained database, then creates a medical cannabis ID card for the patient. With the ID card, a patient may avoid paying state and local sales tax and state excise tax on their Department of Health approved marijuana product purchases. Once your doctor or health practitioner recommends cannabis, then the practitioner furnishes the patient with a signed authorization form. The patient takes this form to a medically endorsed store like White Rabbit Cannabis. The bud tender reviews the form to make sure it is current, then the patient’s name is entered in the state’s database, and the bud tender will create an ID card.

Note: The patient must bring the current authorization form as well as an approved government issued ID like a driver’s license or passport to get their medical cannabis ID card. Patients are urged to check ahead of time to make sure they will not have to wait.
