Five Cannabis Comedies Worth Rewatching

From cult classics to stoner-philosophy masterpieces, these movies are essential viewing for anyone who loves movies where weed is more than just a prop. These movies represent the top shelf of cannabis comedies, the highest of the high, no seeds, no stems, no bunk scenes to harsh your chillax.

The Best Weed Movies

Comedy and cannabis pair together like jam bands and hippies, pizza and beer, beaches and palm trees. These films all feature weed humor but approached from different angles. Sometimes central to the character, sometimes central to the plot, but always played for laughs. While smoking some cannabis along with the viewing experience comes recommended, it is not required for enjoyment, just encouraged for enhancement.

The list does not represent a “best to less best” by any stretch. Think of it as a playlist for your smoking pleasure. Or goes great with your favorite edibles. Or way to remind you how much fun being part of the cannabis culture truly remains as a pastime.

1. Up in Smoke (1978)

Memorable Quote:

“Hey man, am I driving okay?”
“I think we’re parked, man.”

Audience Reaction:
Cheech and Chong’s debut feature was a counterculture explosion. Critics were baffled, but audiences turned it into a sleeper hit that defined an era. Let’s face it, the cannabis comedy essentially grew out of Cheech and Chong’s stoner hippie comedy routines, made infamous across a few comedy albums. If you have never heard the albums, give “The Wedding Album” and Big Bambú a listen.

Why It’s Still a Classic:
It set the tone for every cannabis comedy that followed — raw, absurd, and hilariously relatable to anyone who’s ever had a “too high” moment. This movie feels like a deeply stoned day where the weirdness of the world plays out as a cosmic joke. The pace is leisurely, laid back, and very much like those first times you tried weed.

Best Cannabis Pairing:
A classic landrace Sativa like Acapulco Gold — bright, euphoric, and just old-school enough to match the film’s vintage charm. You have to go with the old school strains for this one. Perhaps Panama Red or even Maui Wowie.

2. Half Baked (1998)

Memorable Quote:

“I love weed, man. I love it more than life itself.”

Audience Reaction:
Initially panned by critics, it became a cult hit for anyone who knew Dave Chappelle’s brand of smart-dumb humor. Stoner comedies always get knocked by the so called critics. Let’s face it, the critics don’t use enough cannabis to know that bagging on everything just ain’t chill. But it is ok to admit you are wrong. And it is ok to laugh at intentionally cheesy weed humor just like enjoying junk food after smoking weed is good… Even if it is for all the wrong reasons.

Why It’s Still a Classic:
The outrageous characters — from “Sir Smokes-A-Lot” to the guys robbing a medical marijuana lab to free a friend — captured the goofy innocence of ‘90s stoner culture. Irreverent, satirical, and full of excellent cameos like Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg smoking a fatty together. Special mention to Director Tamra Davis who did a couple other classic comedies like CB4 and Billy Madison.

Best Cannabis Pairing:
A hybrid like Blue Dream — creative, happy, and the perfect middle ground between chill and hysterical. Plus, a good blue dream definitely seems like the weed that would be grown in a lab by scientists trying to control stoner’s minds.

3. Pineapple Express (2008)

Memorable Quote:

“You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos, motherf***er!”

Audience Reaction:
It wasn’t just a comedy — it was an action-buddy film with bong hits. Audiences loved the mix of explosive sequences and THC-fogged banter between Seth Rogen and James Franco. At the time, Franco and Rogen were top of the pops in terms of popular culture so it was fun to see them breaking out with a weed comedy, a possibly risqué career move even then.

Why It’s Still a Classic:
It made stoner movies cinematic again, proving weed humor could be both ridiculous and well-crafted. The supporting cast members all rock harder than three day heavy metal festival. Danny McBride? Are you kidding? Doesn’t get better.

Best Cannabis Pairing:
Obviously, Pineapple Express — the real strain inspired by the movie. Fruity, tropical, and energetic — ideal for a long laugh session. Try to say you didn’t want to try some pineapple express after seeing it.

4. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Memorable Quote:

“Alright, alright, alright.”

Audience Reaction:
A modest box office performer that evolved into one of the most beloved coming-of-age films ever made. Audiences connected deeply to its carefree ’70s summer vibe. The biggest fans of this movie might be the boomers that lived it, but the characters represent timeless stereotypes. The kind of stereotypes that ring true, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Why It’s Still a Classic:
It’s less about being high and more about that hazy, nostalgic glow of youth — the feeling every cannabis lover knows when time slows down. While weed is sort of a smoke that blows through the meandering sort of a storyline, you feel it, like a warm glow, a nice body high.

Best Cannabis Pairing:
A smooth Indica-leaning hybrid like Granddaddy Purple — perfect for cruising memory lane and easing into mellow laughter.

5. The Big Lebowski (1998)

Memorable Quote:

“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.”

Audience Reaction:
Initially underappreciated but later hailed as a masterpiece of absurd comedy. Fans turned “The Dude” into a pop-culture religion. This movie without a doubt stands the test of time. A movie that only gets better on repeat viewings. The nuance of the characters. The smart and dumb, high and low comedy, the way so much happens without anything really happening. That is the essence of a wake and bake on a day where you get a lot done but don’t remember what exactly you did.

Not that it matters anyway.

Why It’s Still a Classic:
It’s existential stoner art — a mix of mystery, philosophy, and bowling alley enlightenment. The Dude abides, forever. Plus, it made hating the Eagles ok to do without fear of stoner banishment.

Best Cannabis Pairing:
A relaxing Kush strain like OG Kush — contemplative yet carefree, letting you ponder life’s mysteries while laughing at nihilists.

Final Puff

Cannabis and comedy have always gone hand in hand — one expands your mind, the other frees it. Whether you’re firing up an old VHS or streaming in 4K, these classics prove that good weed and good laughs never go out of style.
